Els makes a Million
Whilst I was checking my lottery ticket on Sunday to see if I had won a million, Ernie Els was strolling to a final round of 66 and a 4 round total of 263, 25 under par, winning the Million Dollar Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.
Five strokes further back was Scotlands Colin Montgomerie, who despite scoring in the 60s in each round was never able to seriously challenge Ernie for one of the biggest purses in world golf. Ernie seems to have been off the boil recently, but this victory should give him the renewed confidence to challenge the Tiger at the top of the pile.
There is such a fine line between success and failure in this frustrating game that we all enjoy. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was playing in the group behind Ernie at the Amateur Championship at Ganton GC. Perhaps if I had his power, swing, mental approach and application then the £10 that I won for the 3 numbers on the lottery would not have seemed so significant!
Big Two take JC
The big hitting duo of Laura Davies and John Daly took the JC Penny Classic in Florida at the weekend when Laura converted for a birdie at the 3rd play-off hole after they had tied with Korean Se Ri Pak and American Paul Azinger. This was after both pairings had completed at 24 under par, a 260-stroke total for the 4 rounds of regular play.
Personally I'm surprised that there aren't more mixed events in the world of professional golf, for whilst many enjoy watching the power of the men. I believe that the average club player can learn far more from the top women golfers.
